Since he was our model, many of us incorporated the word into our speech. I liked the word.
I don't know about my contemporaries, but SUNY Oneonta certainly made it a mission to purge the word from my spoken and written vocabulary! None of my professors was gracious about it and two chose to mock me in front of the class after writing acerbic comments on my paper.
During the intervening five decades I have occasionally used the word. I nearly always get a reaction to it. I remember once at an English Department meeting saying, "I shan't allow myself to become too distressed over that." One of the teachers said, "This is serious! Use English." I was being serious.
I think I have enough white hair to resurrect "shan't" from the attic of my lexicon and dust off the cobwebs. Feel free to join me.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7079155051500301101.post-78788173744799546262014-05-06T21:04:04.910-04:002014-05-06T21:04:04.910-04:00thank you for sharing thisthank you for sharing thisAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11585586190525437431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7079155051500301101.post-49457523000186984572014-05-06T09:56:48.238-04:002014-05-06T09:56:48.238-04:00I'm crying AGAIN! :)I'm crying AGAIN! :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7079155051500301101.post-21582406434141237492014-04-28T07:44:37.374-04:002014-04-28T07:44:37.374-04:00I wonder if Washington Orville Hampton ever ran in...I wonder if Washington Orville Hampton ever ran into any of those women?Jon Starkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07123160004981131322noreply@blogger.com
